5 ways good answers lose marks
Five delivery habits that cost strong students marks in medical interviews, and why every one of them can be fixed.
None of these are about knowledge. They are about how the answer is delivered, and every one of them can be fixed.
- Answering the question you expected. Interviewers notice straight away. Go back to the first sentence of the question before you answer.
- A “why this university?” that fits any university. If you can swap the name and it still works, it is not specific enough. Every university guide on this site has a section on the real local angles.
- Rambling without a finish. Interviewers remember your last sentence. Most students do not plan one.
- Jumping to the decision in an ethics station. Show the people involved, the options and the tension before you decide. Reasoning first, action last.
- Letting one station leak into the next. Each station is marked separately. Reset at the door. The next one is a fresh start.
