What does Melbourne look for?

Melbourne Medical School says its purpose is "to transform the health of communities", and its vision is to lead change in health "through education, innovation and advocacy" (Purpose and vision).

The MMI candidate guide lists the kinds of qualities the stations assess:

  • interest in the course
  • working well with others
  • building rapport
  • making decisions
  • communication skills
  • professional behaviour

GEMSAS adds cultural sensitivity, maturity and reliability (GEMSAS – University of Melbourne).

What this means for your answers: Melbourne wants to see how you think and how you come across to other people. Explain your reasons, not only your decision. Show that you take other people's views seriously. "Building rapport" is still assessed even though no one is in the room with you. You need to sound warm and engaged while speaking to a camera.

How does the UniMelb MMI day work?

All steps below come from the official 2026-intake candidate guide.

  1. Before the day. Run the official tech check and a speed test. The guide recommends 20 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload. Use Chrome if you can, and install a second browser as a backup. Wired headphones are fine. Bluetooth is not recommended.
  2. Portal opens. You have 15 minutes to set up, and you must start within 15 minutes of the portal opening.
  3. Station Zero. You show photo ID to the camera, then pan the camera around the room to show you are alone.
  4. Each station. You get 30 seconds to read the instructions. You then get 1 minute to review the scenario, which could be text, slides, a picture or a video. You are recorded during this minute but do not need to speak.
  5. Each question. The question appears as text. Recording starts automatically after 15 seconds. You then have 1 minute to answer, with a timer on screen. After that you get 15 seconds before the next question.
  6. Moving on. Your videos upload automatically. You cannot go back to an earlier question or redo an answer.
  7. Finish. The whole thing must be completed within 90 minutes of the portal opening. This includes a 15-minute buffer for technical problems.

Exam conditions apply. You cannot use pen, paper or a phone. No one else can be in the room. Leaving the interview screen, including opening another tab, is detected and recorded.

UniMelb MMI questions: common themes

Based on the official descriptions, expect stations that ask you to:

  • Explain why you want to study medicine and why at Melbourne (interest in the course).
  • Work through a dilemma where you weigh up options and make a decision.
  • Reflect on working in a team, including when things go wrong.
  • Respond to a short film, picture or piece of text, then answer questions about it. GEMSAS mentions "commenting on short films".
  • Explain your thinking step by step, or talk through a practical task.
  • Show professional behaviour, such as honesty, reliability and respect for other people and cultures.

Because each station usually has 4 short questions, the questions often build on each other. The first question may ask what is happening, and later ones may ask what you would do and why.

Practice question

Worked example (a new practice question, not from any real exam):

You watch a short video of a pharmacy queue. An older man near the front is struggling to explain what he needs, and the people behind him are getting impatient. One customer starts complaining loudly.

Question: What do you think each person in this scene might be feeling, and what would you do if you were the next person in line?

A strong 1-minute answer would:

  • Name the feelings of more than one person: the older man may feel embarrassed or confused, and the people waiting may be stressed or short on time.
  • Avoid judging anyone too quickly. The complaining customer may have their own pressures.
  • Give a clear, practical action, such as calmly offering to help or letting the man take his time, while being respectful and not taking over.
  • Mention respect for the man's dignity and his right to be understood, which links to communication and cultural sensitivity.
  • Finish within the minute with a short summary, so the answer does not get cut off.

How to answer "Why Melbourne?"

General praise will not stand out. Use features that are specific to Melbourne:

  • Clinical school regions. Students are allocated to a Metropolitan or Rural clinical school region at the point of offer (entry requirements). Metropolitan schools include Austin, Epworth, Northern, Royal Melbourne, St Vincent's and Western. Rural clinical schools are in Ballarat, Shepparton, Echuca and Wangaratta (clinical school regions). MMI invitees are asked to indicate a preferred region (Melbourne Medical School – Study).
  • Rural Pathway. Students can complete their whole degree in rural Victoria. Shepparton hosts the MD Rural Pathway (Rural Pathway).
  • North Western Pathway. This pathway is based at the Western Clinical School, with priority access to an Enhanced Primary Care Stream for students committed to general practice in North Western Melbourne (course page).
  • Research and flexibility. In second year, students choose a Research Scholar or Clinical Scholar pathway. "Discovery" subjects let you follow your interests, and eligible students can add a PhD, a Master of Public Health or a Master of Biomedical Engineering (course structure).
  • Community purpose. Link your own experience to the school's aim of transforming the health of communities.

Pick one or two of these that genuinely connect to your background. Do not list all of them.

Common mistakes in the Melbourne MMI

  1. Running out of time. Each answer has a hard 1-minute limit. Long introductions mean your main point gets cut off. Practice with a timer until 1 minute feels natural.
  2. Looking at the screen instead of the camera. Assessors watch a video. Looking at the lens helps you seem engaged and builds rapport.
  3. Expecting to take notes. Pen and paper are not allowed. Use the 1-minute scenario review to remember two or three key details.
  4. Hoping for a second try. There is no re-record, and if a station fails technically you cannot go back in. Calmly finish each answer, even if it was not perfect, and move on.
  5. Ignoring the tech rules. Using a phone, Bluetooth headphones or a weak connection, or clicking away to another tab, can cause problems. Leaving the screen is recorded.

UniMelb MMI FAQs.

Is the University of Melbourne medicine interview online?

How many stations are in the Melbourne MMI?

There are 8 stations, and every candidate completes the same ones. Each lasts about 6 minutes and usually has 4 questions. All stations are worth the same, and the station scores are added together.

When does the University of Melbourne send MMI invitations?

Melbourne's course page says shortlisted applicants are sent an interview request in mid-to-late August, with offers in late October (how to apply). For 2027 entry, GEMSAS listed interview offers in early September and interviews in September/October 2026 for all its schools (GEMSAS key dates). Dates for 2028 entry are not published yet. Check your email from both.

How much is the MMI worth at Melbourne?

For final ranking, the interview is worth 50%, GPA 25% and GAMSAT 25%. GPA and GAMSAT are weighted equally to decide who gets an interview (GEMSAS – University of Melbourne).

No. The candidate guide says you cannot return to a previous question or redo a response. If a station has a technical problem you cannot re-enter it, and you report it on a form at the end.

What equipment do I need?

You need a desktop or laptop, a webcam and microphone, and an up-to-date browser such as Chrome. The guide recommends 20 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload. Mobile devices are not permitted.

Do Rural Pathway applicants have a different interview?

GEMSAS says bonded rural places go to applicants who pass a rural-specific MMI (GEMSAS – University of Melbourne). The Rural Pathway page says the interview assesses your aptitude for medicine and your commitment to rural practice.
