Three types of interview

the format changes. the question does not.

Every interview is really asking: would I trust this person with a patient one day? Know which type you are sitting, because each one is prepared for differently.

Live MMI

Live multiple mini interview

A circuit of short stations with a real interviewer in each, in person or on Zoom. Follow-up questions test whether an answer was yours or memorised.

Monash, UQ, Wollongong, Western Sydney, Macquarie, Curtin, Deakin.

Recorded MMI

Recorded online interview

Questions appear on screen. You get seconds to think, then record to camera with no one reacting and no second take. Energy and timing are everything.

University of Melbourne, Notre Dame (Fremantle and Sydney), Griffith.

Panel

Panel or structured interview

One sitting with a small panel or two interviewers, scenarios and set questions. It feels like a conversation, but it is marked against the same kind of criteria.

Flinders, UNSW, the Joint Medical Program (Newcastle and UNE).

six things every applicant should know.

  1. The interview can outweigh two years of work.A third to three quarters of the final ranking, where published. Check your university every year.
  2. Undergraduate interviews run late November to January.Monash from 1 December with January rounds; UQ provisional entry mid to late November; UNSW invitations around 16 December.
  3. Graduate entry interviews run September to October.GEMSAS schools (Melbourne, UQ, Notre Dame, Griffith, Macquarie, Deakin) with first-round offers from late October.
  4. Invitations can arrive with days of notice.Skills take weeks to build. The right time to start is before the invitation.
  5. Three schools record you with nobody watching.Melbourne, Notre Dame and Griffith. No nods, no follow-ups, one take.
  6. You usually get one attempt.Monash lets you sit its MMI for a course once; a later application reuses the score. Treat the first one as the only one.

Australian medical school interview FAQs.

Which Australian medical schools use an MMI?

Most of them. Melbourne, Monash, UQ, Notre Dame, Griffith, Macquarie, Deakin, Wollongong, Western Sydney and Curtin all use a multiple mini interview or a multi-station assessment. Flinders uses a panel interview and UNSW uses a structured interview with two interviewers. Formats change, so check the official page in the table above.

When are Australian medical interviews held?

Graduate-entry interviews (GEMSAS schools such as Melbourne, UQ, Notre Dame, Griffith, Macquarie and Deakin) usually run in September and October. The 2027-entry graduate interviews have finished, so if you are applying for graduate entry in 2028, expect your interview around September to October 2027 and check GEMSAS for the published dates. Undergraduate interviews (Monash, UQ provisional, Western Sydney, Adelaide, UNSW) usually run from late November into January, and the 2027-entry rounds are about to start.

How much does the interview count for?

Where universities publish it, the interview is between a third and three quarters of the final ranking. At Western Sydney it is 75%. At Monash it counts the same as your ATAR and your UCAT. Check your own university, because the rules change.

Do Australian medical schools use Casper?

Some do. For 2027 entry, GEMSAS listed Casper as part of selection for interview at Notre Dame Fremantle and Notre Dame Sydney, alongside GAMSAT, GPA and bonus points. Casper is a separate online test, not an interview, so you still sit the MMI if you are invited. Requirements change each year and 2028-entry rules are not published yet, so check GEMSAS and each university’s own page.

Can I prepare for a recorded interview?

Yes. Recorded formats (Melbourne, Notre Dame, Griffith) reward people who can keep their energy and timing with no interviewer reacting. Our free timed practice runs for UniMelb, Notre Dame and Griffith are built to the real format.
