Edinburgh Medical School selects for its six-year MBChB through an Assessment Day: a half-day session with three short stations (two individual and one group), each scored by its own selector. Assessment Days run in person at Edinburgh BioQuarter from 23 November 2026 to 3 February 2027, with online sessions on 9–11 February 2027 for applicants living outside the UK and Ireland. The Assessment Day counts for 50% of your final ranking.

What does Edinburgh look for?
Edinburgh says its Assessment Day scores attributes drawn from the Medical Schools Council's statement on the core values and attributes needed to study medicine (Assessment Days). That statement groups qualities under four headings: knowledge, skills and performance; safety and quality; communication, partnership and teamwork; and maintaining trust (Medical Schools Council). In everyday terms, that means:
- a genuine, realistic interest in medicine
- reflection, organisation and resilience
- clear communication and good teamwork
- respect, empathy, honesty and integrity
Edinburgh's 2027 booklet adds what selectors value in the personal statement, which gives useful clues for the day: personal qualities such as empathy and communication, evidence that you have explored the career, and interests outside study. It values "quality of experience over quantity" and clear reflection on what you learned (2027 booklet).
What this means for your answers: depth beats a long list. Pick a few experiences and be ready to explain what you learned and how it changed you. In the group station, show how you work with others, not just what you know.
How does the Assessment Day work?
- Shortlisting. Applications made by 15 October that meet all academic requirements enter selection. Edinburgh scores your academic record (achieved and predicted grades), UCAT decile and SJT band.
- Invitation. Shortlisted applicants are invited to a half-day session. Invitees receive more detail on the structure separately.
- Arrival and introduction. The half-day includes a chance to learn about studying medicine at Edinburgh (Selection process).
- Stations. Five sessions run each day. In each session, applicants rotate between two individual stations and one group station. Selectors ask pre-set questions and score you on a marksheet.
- Ranking. Your Assessment Day score (50%) is combined with academic (25%), UCAT (17.5%) and SJT (7.5%) scores. Offers go to the highest-ranked applicants in each fee group.
- Outcome. All scores are compared before decisions, so the wait can be long. You should hear by the end of March.
Edinburgh interview questions: common themes
Using the core values Edinburgh assesses against, expect:
- Motivation and insight: why medicine, and what you learned from talking to doctors, work experience or reading.
- Reflection: a challenge, mistake or piece of feedback and what you did with it.
- Group station: working with other applicants on a task or discussion. Selectors look at how you listen, contribute and help the group move forward.
- Ethics and professionalism: honesty, confidentiality, fairness, and how you would act in a difficult situation.
- Your wider life: community involvement, leadership and hobbies, which Edinburgh names as things it values.
- Health in Scotland: you would train within NHS Scotland, whose shared values are "care and compassion", "dignity and respect", "openness, honesty and responsibility" and "quality and teamwork" (Scottish Government). These are a helpful lens for scenario questions.
Worked example
Question: "A friend in your first year tells you they have been feeling very low and struggling to keep up. They ask you not to tell anyone. What would you do?"
A strong answer would:
- Start with the friend: listen without judging, thank them for trusting you, and ask gently how they are coping.
- Check for safety. If there is any sign they might be at risk of harm, explain kindly that you would need to get help, even though they asked you not to.
- Encourage them to use support, such as a GP, the university's student support service or a personal tutor, and offer to go with them.
- Respect their wishes where it is safe to, and explain the limits of keeping a secret honestly.
- Look after yourself too, and know where you can get advice.
- Link to medicine: honesty, compassion and knowing when to involve others are part of being a safe doctor.
How to answer "Why Edinburgh?"
Specific, sourced angles:
- A built-in research year. Year 3 is a full-time research year leading to a BMedSci (Hons). Edinburgh says it is "the only Scottish school to do so" among six-year programmes (Why study at Edinburgh).
- Research strength. Edinburgh reports being fourth in the UK for research power in REF 2021, with five major research institutes (2027 booklet).
- Clinical training across Scotland. From Year 4, teaching is mainly clinical in Edinburgh's three teaching hospitals, community GP practices and "hospitals across south and central Scotland", with the school based at BioQuarter beside the Royal Infirmary (Location and facilities).
- Final-year assistantship. In Year 6 you can undertake some Foundation Year 1 duties under supervision (2027 booklet).
- History. The school has nearly 300 years of history, including pioneering women in medicine such as Sophia Jex-Blake and Elsie Inglis (Why study at Edinburgh).
The research year is the most distinctive angle. If you choose it, explain what kind of question interests you and why.
Common mistakes in the Edinburgh interview
- Dominating or disappearing in the group station. Talking over others and staying silent both score poorly. Make a few clear points, build on others' ideas and invite quieter people in.
- Listing experiences without reflection. Edinburgh says it values quality over quantity. One experience explained well is better than five mentioned briefly.
- Treating the research year as a box to tick. Six years is a long course. Be ready to say why the research year appeals to you personally.
- Not knowing your personal statement. It is not formally assessed, but Edinburgh says it may help prepare you for the Assessment Day.
- Letting one station affect the next. Each station has its own selector who scores you independently. Start each one fresh.
