What does Monash look for?

Monash lists seven qualities its MMI stations assess (direct entry requirements):

  • Advocacy – speaking up for patients or people who are less able to speak for themselves
  • Collaboration – working well with others
  • Critical thinking – looking at a problem from different sides before you decide
  • Empathy – understanding how someone else feels
  • Ethical reasoning – working out the right thing to do and explaining why
  • Motivation – why you want medicine and what you have done to find out about it
  • Resilience – coping with setbacks and learning from them

The Faculty also expects "high standards of ethical behaviour" and stresses equity and diversity (values and vision).

What this means for your answers: Monash says there are no right or wrong answers and no clinical knowledge is expected (graduate entry FAQs). You are assessed on how you think about real-life situations. Advocacy and resilience are less common in other MMIs, so prepare for them on purpose.

How does the Monash MMI day work?

  1. Book your slot. Invitations come by email. You choose your own time through an online system. Changes are not allowed once booking closes.
  2. Set up for Zoom. Find a quiet, private room with a reliable connection. Monash encourages applicants to practice speaking over Zoom (direct entry FAQs).
  3. Pre-briefing. The session starts with a briefing. For direct entry, the whole circuit, including briefing and debriefing, takes 70–80 minutes.
  4. Six stations in a row. At each station you get 2 minutes to read the scenario, then an 8-minute conversation with an interviewer. Expect follow-up questions that test your reasoning.
  5. A new interviewer each time. Each scenario is scored by a different interviewer (graduate entry FAQs). A weak station does not carry over to the next one.
  6. Debrief and wait. No feedback is given. For direct entry, your MMI result is combined with your ATAR aggregate and UCAT ANZ score once ATARs are released.

You only get one attempt. You can attend the MMI for a course only once. If you apply again, your earlier score is used. Interviewing for direct entry does not count against a later graduate entry application.

Direct entry vs graduate entry: what is different

  • Who you are up against. Direct entry applicants are high school graduates ranked on ATAR, UCAT ANZ and MMI. Graduate entry applicants come from set Monash degrees and are ranked on WAM and MMI, with the interview worth 60%.
  • When you interview. Graduate entry interviews are in September. Direct entry interviews are in December and January, often before you know your ATAR. Victorian and Dean's Rural List applicants in the December rounds are shortlisted on UCAT ANZ only.
  • Rural focus. The Dean's Rural List (DRL) applies to both routes. In graduate entry, at least 27% of places are set aside for DRL applicants, and 35 of about 72 domestic places go to the End-to-End Rural Cohorts (graduate entry requirements; End-to-End Rural Cohorts). If you apply through a rural route, expect your interest in rural health to come up.
  • What you can draw on. Graduate entry applicants have a degree's worth of experience to talk about. Direct entry applicants should use school, work, sport, volunteering and family experiences. Monash says volunteer work is not scored but can help you answer questions.

Monash MMI questions: common themes

Based on Monash's seven qualities, expect stations on:

  • Ethical dilemmas where you have to weigh up competing duties, such as honesty and loyalty.
  • Advocacy, where someone is being treated unfairly or cannot speak up for themselves.
  • Teamwork and conflict, such as a group member not pulling their weight.
  • Empathy and communication, for example responding to someone who is upset.
  • Critical thinking about a health or social issue, where you need to give more than one view.
  • Motivation, covering why medicine, what you have learned about the job and why Monash.
  • Resilience, covering a setback, what you learned and what you would do differently.

With 8 minutes and a live interviewer, expect follow-ups such as "What if that didn't work?" or "What would the other person say?"

Practice question

Worked example (a new practice question, not from any real exam):

You help coach an under-12 netball team on weekends. A parent pulls you aside and says the head coach often makes her daughter keep training when she says her ankle hurts. The head coach is a well-liked volunteer who has run the club for years.

What would you do?

A strong answer would:

  • Start with the child's safety and wellbeing. This is the main concern, and it shows advocacy for someone who cannot easily speak up.
  • Show empathy for the parent and also for the coach, without assuming the worst. Find out more before judging.
  • Describe practical first steps: thank the parent, check on the child, and speak to the coach privately and respectfully.
  • Know when to escalate. If the concern is real or keeps happening, raise it with the club's committee or child safety officer, following club policy.
  • Weigh the tension openly. You may worry about upsetting a respected volunteer, but a child's safety comes first.
  • Reflect briefly on what you would learn, such as the value of clear injury policies, which shows critical thinking.

How to answer "Why Monash?"

Make your answer specific to Monash and to the route you are applying for:

  • Direct entry: Two years at Clayton, then three years of hospital and community placements. These include major hospitals such as Monash Medical Centre and The Alfred (course page). The course uses small-group case learning and early clinical contact, includes a research placement with a researcher or clinician, and finishes with a trainee internship final year.
  • Graduate entry: First year is at Monash Rural Health Churchill in Gippsland. The North West Cohort places students across the Loddon Mallee region, including Bendigo, Mildura and Swan Hill, and a new Gippsland Cohort starts in 2027 (End-to-End Rural Cohorts).
  • Rural training: Monash Rural Health teaches the MD at eight sites: Bairnsdale, Bendigo, Churchill, Leongatha, Mildura, Sale, Traralgon and Warragul (rural health footprint).
  • Research and advocacy: The Faculty aims to turn biomedical and public health research into better health outcomes and to advocate for good policy (values and vision).

Link one or two of these to your own experience. For example, if you grew up in regional Victoria, talk about what rural training means to you.

Common mistakes in the Monash MMI

  1. Wasting the 2 minutes of reading time. Use it to decide the main issue, who is affected and your first step, so you start the 8 minutes with direction.
  2. Running out of things to say. Eight minutes is long. Answers that only cover one side of an issue leave the interviewer to fill the gaps. Look at the issue from several sides and expect follow-ups.
  3. Memorising scripts. A live interviewer will ask "why?" and "what if?". Memorised answers fall apart under follow-up questions.
  4. Forgetting advocacy and resilience. These are named qualities at Monash. Have real examples ready of a time you spoke up for someone and a time you dealt with a setback.
  5. Poor Zoom setup. Bad lighting, a noisy room or a weak connection make it harder to come across well. Test everything beforehand, and look at the camera when you speak.

Free practice.

Live MMIs reward people who are comfortable thinking aloud with someone watching. A timed practice run over Zoom, with 2 minutes of reading and 8 minutes of speaking, is the best way to build that comfort. A free Monash-style mock is coming soon: see how our mock interviews work.

Monash MMI FAQs.

Is the Monash MMI the same for direct and graduate entry?

Both routes use a live MMI on Zoom. The main differences are timing and weighting. Graduate entry interviews were in September, and the interview is worth 60% alongside your WAM. Direct entry interviews run in December and January, and the MMI is weighted equally with ATAR and UCAT ANZ. The 6-station timing on this page (2 minutes reading, 8 minutes interview) is the published direct entry format, so check your invitation for graduate entry details (direct entry requirements; graduate entry requirements).

Is the Monash medicine interview online or in person?

It is online. Monash says interviews are held via Zoom only, for both direct entry and graduate entry (direct entry FAQs).

How many stations are in the Monash MMI?

There are six stations. For direct entry, each has 2 minutes of reading followed by an 8-minute interview, and the full circuit takes 70–80 minutes including briefings (direct entry requirements).

When are Monash medicine interviews for 2027 entry?

Direct entry: 1–2 December 2026 (DRL), 8–9 December 2026 (Victorian non-DRL), 5–6 January 2027 and 18–19 January 2027. Graduate entry interviews were on 8–10 September 2026; dates for 2028 graduate entry are not published yet. All dates are subject to change (direct entry applications; graduate entry applications).

How much does the interview count at Monash?

For direct entry, the ATAR aggregate, UCAT ANZ total and MMI are weighted equally. For graduate entry, the MMI is worth 60% and WAM 40%.

Can I resit the Monash MMI if I apply again?

No. You can attend the MMI for a course only once, and your earlier result is used if you reapply. Interviewing for direct entry does not stop you from interviewing later for graduate entry.

Do I need medical knowledge for the Monash interview?

No. Monash says no clinical knowledge is expected and there are no right or wrong answers. You are assessed on your views about real-life scenarios (graduate entry FAQs).

Does work experience or volunteering count?

It is not scored directly. Monash only scores the aggregate, UCAT ANZ and interview. It does say these experiences may help you answer interview questions.

What is the Dean's Rural List?

It is Monash's rural entry list for applicants who meet rural background rules. For direct entry, DRL applicants have their own interview cut-off and interview first, on 1–2 December 2026. In graduate entry, at least 27% of places are reserved for DRL applicants.
