What does Macquarie look for?

Macquarie says the MD is designed for students with strong academic results, varied experiences, good interpersonal skills and resilience, plus a commitment to improving the health of Australian and global communities (Macquarie MD admissions).

The program's graduate profile is built around four capabilities: Scientist and Scholar, Clinical Practitioner, Engaged Global Citizen, and Professional (About the Macquarie MD). Macquarie describes the doctors it wants to produce as "patient-centred and safety-focused, culturally responsive, globally aware", able to work in teams and to communicate well, including through digital health systems.

In plain words, that means:

  • Patient-centred – you put the person's needs and wishes at the centre, not just the medical problem.
  • Safety-focused – you speak up about risks and mistakes, and you understand that systems, not just individuals, keep patients safe.
  • Culturally responsive and globally aware – you are curious about how health, illness and care differ between cultures and countries, and you adapt without judging.
  • Resilient – you can cope with pressure, setbacks and time away from home.

What this means for your answers: Your MMI answers should show that you listen, think about safety and fairness, and respect people whose background is different from yours. Macquarie's guides say the MMI assesses "qualities considered by Macquarie University to be associated with success in both the study of medicine and later practice", and that academic performance is not discussed. So do not spend station time on your grades.

How does the Macquarie MMI day work?

  1. Invitation. GEMSAS releases interview offers in early September. Under GEMSAS you interview at one medical school only, and your score is standardised (GEMSAS interviews). Your email will include the format, time and ID requirements.
  2. One fixed day (domestic). For 2027 entry, all domestic MMIs were held face-to-face on Saturday 26 September 2026. Plan travel to North Ryde in advance.
  3. Check in. Bring photographic ID. The 2027 guides also mention signing a confidentiality form.
  4. Rotate through the stations. You move through a series of short stations – four in Macquarie's 2027 pathway guides – each lasting about 8 minutes with a different trained interviewer. Each station is a fresh start.
  5. Finish and wait. Offers for domestic applicants come through GEMSAS from late October or early November. Your final rank is half GPA, half MMI.

International applicants follow the same idea, but online through Zoom, and are usually told the outcome about two weeks after their interview (International Admissions Guide 2027).

Macquarie MMI questions: common themes

Macquarie does not publish its stations. Based on the qualities the program describes, these themes are worth preparing:

  • Motivation and fit – why medicine, and why a program with a strong global and international focus.
  • Ethics and patient safety – situations where something has gone wrong or might go wrong, and what you would do.
  • Communication – explaining something clearly, or responding to someone who is upset or confused (some stations may use role-play).
  • Teamwork and professionalism – working in a group, handling disagreement, and how you behave when no one is watching.
  • Cultural awareness and global health – caring for people from different backgrounds, and what you can learn from other health systems.
  • Resilience – coping with stress, setbacks, and living away from your usual support network.
  • Current health issues – including digital health and how technology is changing care.

With only about 8 minutes per station, you need to get to the point quickly, but still show your reasoning.

Practice question

Worked example (a new, practice-only question): "You are a medical student on placement in another country. A patient's family asks you, rather than the doctor, whether their father's test results are good news. You have seen the results, but you are not sure what they mean. What would you do?"

A strong answer would:

  • Respond kindly and calmly to the family. Recognise they are worried and that it took courage to ask.
  • Be honest about your role and limits: you are a student, you are not sure what the results mean, and it would not be safe or fair to guess.
  • Avoid simply walking away. Offer to find the doctor or let the team know the family has questions.
  • Think about culture and language: in some families and countries, decisions and news are shared differently. Check whether an interpreter is needed and how the patient would like information shared.
  • Close the loop: tell the doctor what the family asked, and check the family was spoken to.
  • Briefly reflect on what this shows about patient safety and good communication in any health system.

How to answer "Why Macquarie?"

Strong answers link a specific feature of the Macquarie MD to your own experience:

  • A long placement in India. In Year 3, students complete clinical placements of 24 weeks in Australia and 22 weeks in India, with an online group comparing experiences across both countries (Macquarie MD page). The international site is Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad (Clinical training placements).
  • A university-led health centre. MQ Health is described as Australia's first fully integrated, university-led academic health sciences centre, combining patient care, teaching and research in one place (Macquarie MD page).
  • Other clinical sites. Placements also include Northern Sydney Local Health District, Northern Beaches Hospital and the MindSpot Clinic, a digital mental health service (Clinical training placements).
  • Research built in. Year 3 includes a year-long research project, and Year 2 covers research skills (Macquarie MD page).
  • Learning with other health students. Year 1 shares units with Doctor of Physiotherapy students on social health, Indigenous health and evidence-based practice (Macquarie MD page).
  • Patient safety focus. Year 2 includes patient safety and quality in critical care, which matches the "safety-focused" graduate the program describes.

If you choose the India placement as your reason, be ready to explain why it matters to you, and how you would cope being away from home for months.

Common mistakes in the Macquarie MMI

  1. Running out of time. About 8 minutes goes quickly. Practice giving a clear answer in the first two or three minutes, leaving time for follow-up questions.
  2. Carrying a bad station into the next one. Each station has a new interviewer who has not seen your earlier answers. Reset and start fresh.
  3. Treating "global" as a buzzword. Saying you want to "help people overseas" is vague. Talk about what you might learn from another health system, and show respect for local staff and patients.
  4. Overlooking patient safety. In ethics or role-play stations, many applicants focus on being nice and forget to say how they would keep the patient safe and who they would tell.
  5. Talking about grades. Macquarie states academic results are not discussed in the MMI. Use your time to show personal qualities, not achievements.
