What does Griffith look for?

GEMSAS describes GUMSAA as designed to assess "personal qualities deemed desirable in medical students and medical practitioners". Griffith's most recent published list of qualities (2024 FAQ) is:

  • good communication skills
  • an empathetic and ethical approach
  • a reflective manner
  • problem-solving
  • teamwork and decision-making

(Griffith FAQ 2024)

Griffith's stated vision for medicine is "student-centred learning for patient-centred care", with a strong focus on general practice, primary care, and rural and remote health (Griffith medicine information). The MD aims to produce "caring and competent" doctors who understand the social and ethical side of medicine (program 5099).

What this means for your answers:

  • Communication: in a recording, clarity is everything. Answer the question asked, in a sensible order, in plain words.
  • Empathy and ethics: name the people affected and how they might feel, then explain what is fair and safe.
  • Reflection: when you use your own experience, say what you learned and what you would do differently. This is listed separately, so it matters.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making: come to a clear decision. Do not just list options and stop.
  • Teamwork: show that you value other people's input and know when to ask for help.

How GUMSAA works, step by step

  1. Invitation. Graduate entry applicants are invited based on their GPA and GAMSAT rank. Applicants from a rural background who meet the criteria get priority access to GUMSAA under the Griffith University Rural Priority Access Scheme (GURPAS).
  2. Choose your time. You pick your own slot within Griffith's window. For 2027 entry this was 21–25 September 2026.
  3. Practice on SAMMI. Griffith gives you chances to practice recording before the real assessment. Use them to check your camera, sound, lighting and internet.
  4. Read Griffith's applicant guide. Griffith publishes a step-by-step SAMMI guide for medicine applicants. It explains logging in, timing and uploading.
  5. On the day. Each question shows a scenario, then you record your answer to the camera. There is no interviewer in front of you, so you manage your own pace.
  6. Finish and upload. For Griffith's dental interview on the same system, Griffith says to allow about an hour (including sound checks and uploading), to finish in one sitting, and that your photo ID is checked against your recording (Griffith dental interviews). Expect something similar for medicine, but follow the medicine guide.
  7. Offers. Your interview score makes up half of your offer rank. Main offers come by early November.

Griffith interview questions: common themes

Griffith does not release its questions in advance. Based on the qualities it assesses, expect scenarios on:

  • Ethical dilemmas – honesty, fairness, safety, confidentiality.
  • Teamwork – group conflict, someone not doing their share, working with people who disagree with you.
  • Communication and empathy – how you would speak to someone who is upset, worried or confused.
  • Reflection – questions about your own experiences, mistakes and what you learned.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making – situations where you must weigh options and choose.
  • Community and rural health – given Griffith's focus on primary care and rural practice, be ready to talk about access to care outside big cities.
Practice question

Example (new question written by m.i ready, not from Griffith): "You are in a group of three completing a project that is due in two days. One member has stopped replying to messages and has not done their part. What would you do?"

A strong recorded answer covers:

  • A clear first step: contact the group member directly and kindly, without blaming, to find out what is happening. There may be a personal reason.
  • Balancing fairness to the rest of the group with care for the person who has gone quiet.
  • A practical plan for the deadline, such as sharing out the remaining work and agreeing on who does what.
  • Knowing when to involve the tutor, and being honest with them about what happened.
  • A short reflection: what you would do differently next time, such as setting check-ins early.
  • Finishing within time with a one-line summary, since no one will stop you or prompt you.

How to answer "Why Griffith?"

Griffith-specific angles you can link to your own experience:

  • Primary care and rural focus. Griffith says its curriculum has a strong focus on general practice, primary care, and rural and remote health (Griffith medicine information).
  • Rural training options. The Griffith Rural Residential Medical Program runs the whole MD rurally: two years in Toowoomba, then clinical years at rural hospital sites such as Warwick, Roma, Stanthorpe, Dalby, Kingaroy and Goondiwindi (GriffithRRMP 2026 (PDF)). Griffith also aims for at least 25% of MD students to complete a year of rural placement (Griffith rural priority).
  • Where you learn. Years 1–2 are at the Gold Coast campus and the Sunshine Coast Health Institute. Clinical placements range from rural settings to Gold Coast University Hospital and the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (program 5099).
  • How you learn. Team-based learning, small groups, clinical simulation and learning alongside students from other health courses.
  • Research. A small MD/PhD pathway (5–10 students) lets you add two years of full-time research.

Pick one or two of these that genuinely connect to your story. Listing all of them sounds rehearsed.

Common mistakes in a recorded interview

  1. Looking at your own face, not the camera. In a recording, the camera is the assessor's eyes. Put your camera at eye level and look into it.
  2. Losing track of time. There is no interviewer to nod, smile or move you on. Practice with a timer so you can finish with a clear ending, not mid-sentence.
  3. Forgetting to show warmth. Talking to a screen can make people sound flat. Speak as if to a real person who is affected by the scenario.
  4. Skipping reflection. Griffith lists a "reflective manner" as a quality. Say what you learned, not only what you did.
  5. Not using the practice recordings. Griffith offers practice on SAMMI. A noisy room, poor lighting or weak internet is much easier to fix before the real day.

Griffith interview FAQs.

Is the Griffith medicine interview live or recorded?

Recorded. GEMSAS says GUMSAA is done through the SAMMI online system, and Griffith gives you chances to practice recording your interview beforehand (GEMSAS – Griffith). Earlier years (2022 and 2024) were live on Microsoft Teams.

Do high school graduates sit the Griffith interview?

No. High school graduates apply for the Bachelor of Medical Science, which selects by ATAR, with UCAT ANZ used only to separate tied applicants. Students who finish it with a GPA of at least 5.5 have a direct pathway into the MD and do not sit GAMSAT or GUMSAA (QTAC 228272).

When is GUMSAA?

For 2027 entry, GEMSAS lists a tentative window of Monday 21 to Friday 25 September 2026. You choose your own slot in that window. Dates for 2028 entry are not published yet.

How is the Griffith offer rank worked out?

Half comes from your interview score and half from your interview selection rank. Your selection rank is itself a 50:50 mix of GPA and overall GAMSAT (GEMSAS – Griffith).

What GPA and GAMSAT do I need for a Griffith interview?

The minimums are a GPA of 5.0 and a GAMSAT of 50 in each section and overall. GEMSAS notes the GPA needed for an interview is likely well above 5.0, and a strong GAMSAT can offset a lower GPA. There is no fixed GAMSAT cut-off.

Do rural applicants get priority?

Yes. Applicants who have lived in an MM 2–7 area for 5 years in a row or 10 years in total can apply under GURPAS. Competitive applicants who meet the criteria get priority access to GUMSAA (Griffith rural priority).

Do First Peoples applicants sit GUMSAA?

No. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants through the First Peoples Health Pathway have a separate panel interview instead.
