once you are invited, the interview decides.
At most UK medical schools your grades and UCAT decide who gets an interview. After that, the offer is decided on your interview score alone. Schools that publish exactly this include Glasgow, Leeds, Nottingham, Imperial, UCL, King's, Liverpool and Queen's Belfast.
A few schools add your UCAT back in after interview, but a weak interview is never rescued by a strong UCAT. Most students spend months on the UCAT and a weekend on the interview. We think that is the wrong way round.
University guides.
Each guide is written from the school's official pages: how the interview works, what they look for, question themes, common mistakes and a practice question.

the format changes. the question does not.
Every interview is really asking: would I trust this person with a patient one day? Know which type you are sitting, because each one is prepared for differently.
Multiple mini interview
A circuit of short stations. Each has a new question and a new interviewer. A weak station does not sink you, because the next one starts fresh.
32 of the 41 schools, including Imperial, UCL, King’s, St George’s, Brunel and KMMS.
Panel interview
One longer conversation with two or three interviewers. They follow up on what you say, so depth and honesty matter more than speed.
Barts (QMUL) and Glasgow.
Academic or mixed
Oxford and Cambridge run academic interviews: problems and data to think through aloud with tutors. A few schools mix formats or add a group task.
Oxford, Cambridge, Southampton, Bristol, Keele, Edinburgh, Dundee.
six things every applicant should know.
- Everything starts with 15 October. The UCAS deadline for medicine, 6pm. Four medicine choices; the fifth must be something else.
- The UCAT decides who is interviewed. Then most schools forget it.Once you are in the room, most decide the offer on the interview alone.
- The season runs late November to March.Edinburgh and Glasgow start late November; Oxford, Cambridge and Aberdeen in December; Leeds in the first week of January.
- Invitations can give a week’s notice. If you start preparing when the email lands, you have already lost most of the time.
- Online and in person are both common.Glasgow, Lancaster, Plymouth, Keele, Brunel, King’s, Bristol and Oxford are online. Manchester and BSMS let you choose.
- The SJT band can end your application.Band 4 is rejected outright at many schools; at Birmingham, Sheffield and Newcastle it is worth marks at interview.
UK medical school interview FAQs.
Do all UK medical schools use MMIs?
Most do. The Medical Schools Council says about three quarters of UK schools use multiple mini interviews. Oxford and Cambridge hold academic interviews with college tutors, and a few schools (for example Queen Mary) use an online panel. Check each school in the table.
When are UK medical school interviews?
Mostly December to March. Oxford interviews in early to mid December and Cambridge from 7 to 18 December 2026. Many MMIs run from December through to February or March. Invitations can arrive with only a week or two of notice, so start preparing before the invitation.
How is a UK medical interview scored?
Each station or question is marked separately, usually against set qualities such as communication, ethical reasoning, motivation and insight into the NHS. Some schools use the interview score alone to make offers (Imperial, UCL); others combine it with a pre-interview score (Edinburgh, Newcastle).
Can you coach me for an Oxbridge interview?
Yes. Oxford and Cambridge interviews are academic conversations rather than stations, so practice looks different: thinking out loud through unfamiliar science problems, with a coach who pushes back. Book a free call and we will explain how.
