The University of Notre Dame Australia interviews Doctor of Medicine applicants for its Fremantle campus and its Broome campus (the Kimberley Centre for Remote Medical Training) with a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). The MMI is recorded on an online platform, so you answer each prompt on camera with no live interviewer. For the 2027 intake, interview offers were released in September 2026 and interviews ran in September and October 2026. Dates for 2028 entry are not published yet.

What does Notre Dame Fremantle look for?
Notre Dame is a Catholic university. Its stated mission is to provide university education "within a context of Catholic faith and values", and its guiding principles include academic excellence, active community engagement and responsible stewardship (Notre Dame – Our vision).
The Fremantle School of Medicine says its purpose is to graduate doctors who will serve areas of unmet need, especially Australia's remote and rural areas. It also highlights Indigenous health, bioethics, advocacy and social justice (School of Medicine, Fremantle). The MD learning outcomes include person-centred and culturally safe care, communication and teamwork, ethics and professionalism, reflective practice, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives (Notre Dame – Doctor of Medicine).
What this means for your answers:
- Show that you think about people, not just problems. Talk about the patient's dignity, wishes and circumstances.
- Show fair, careful ethical reasoning. Notre Dame teaches bioethics as part of the degree, so explain how you weigh up options.
- Show that you understand health is not the same everywhere in Western Australia. Distance, access to services and culture all matter.
- Be honest and reflective. Talk about what you learned from experiences, not just what you did.
How does the Notre Dame Fremantle MMI day work?
- Invitation. Interview offers usually come out in September (for the 2027 intake, September 2026). Read the email carefully. It tells you the deadline, the platform and the rules.
- Set up. You need a computer with a working camera and microphone, a steady internet connection and a quiet, well-lit room.
- Log in within your window. Because the MMI is recorded, you choose when to complete it within the time Notre Dame gives you. Do not leave it to the last day in case of technical problems.
- Answer each station. A prompt appears on screen (this may be a question, a scenario or a picture or quote). You then record your answer while a timer runs. There is no interviewer to nod, ask follow-up questions or tell you how long is left.
- Move through all stations. Each station is a fresh start. A weak answer in one station does not have to affect the next.
- Scoring. Your recordings are reviewed after you submit. The interview counts for half of your final ranking for an offer.
Check your invitation for the exact number of stations, the time per station, whether there is thinking time and whether a practice question is offered. Do not assume these are the same as another university's MMI.
Notre Dame Fremantle MMI questions: common themes
These are the kinds of areas a Notre Dame MMI may cover. Themes only, not real questions:
- Motivation: why medicine, and why Notre Dame, Fremantle or Broome.
- Ethics: respect for life and dignity, consent, honesty, fairness in how health resources are shared.
- Rural and remote health: working with limited resources, distance from specialist care, and the challenge of keeping doctors in country towns.
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health: cultural safety, trust and listening to communities.
- Teamwork and professionalism: working with nurses, Aboriginal health workers and other staff; dealing with a colleague who is struggling.
- Communication: explaining something clearly, showing empathy, speaking as if to a patient or friend.
- Reflection: a time you made a mistake, faced a challenge or changed your mind.
- Picture or quote prompts: responding to an image or a short statement and giving a balanced view.
Worked example (a new, practice-style question): You are a medical student on placement in a small country town. A patient asks you not to record a sensitive diagnosis in their notes, because their cousin works at the clinic and they are worried the whole town will find out. How would you handle this?
A strong answer would:
- Start by acknowledging the patient's worry and show you take it seriously, rather than brushing it aside.
- Explain that you are a student, so you would not make the decision alone. You would speak with your supervising doctor.
- Show you understand that accurate records protect the patient's safety, so leaving the diagnosis out is not a safe option.
- Explain that health staff have a duty of confidentiality, and that there are usually ways to limit who can see sensitive information.
- Recognise that privacy is a real issue in small communities where people know each other, and that trust is key to people coming back for care.
- Finish with a clear plan: listen, be honest about what you can and cannot do, involve your supervisor and follow up with the patient.
How to answer "Why Notre Dame Fremantle?"
Good answers are specific and honest. Some real features you can draw on:
- A clear rural and remote mission. The Fremantle school says its purpose is to train doctors for areas of unmet need, especially rural and remote Australia (School of Medicine, Fremantle). At least 28.5% of Commonwealth supported places must go to students from a rural background (GEMSAS).
- The Broome option. At the Kimberley Centre for Remote Medical Training (KCRMT), Years 1 and 2 are in Broome and Years 3 and 4 are in regional WA training hubs (GEMSAS). Notre Dame says the centre aims to train local people who want to stay and work in their own communities, and to reduce reliance on short-term visiting doctors in towns such as Newman (Notre Dame news, May 2025). It is WA's only fully remote medical training program (Notre Dame news, August 2025).
- Rural Clinical School of WA. Fremantle students can apply for rural placements through the Rural Clinical School of Western Australia (GEMSAS), which runs across sites such as Albany, Broome, Bunbury, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Karratha, Kununurra and Port Hedland (RCSWA sites).
- Small-group learning. Years 1 and 2 use problem-based learning in small groups, and students have mentors from the start of the program (School of Medicine, Fremantle).
- Ethics built in. The university's Core Curriculum is taught within the MD as bioethics (Notre Dame – Core Curriculum).
- The health gap you would be training to close. National data show people in remote and very remote areas carry a higher burden of disease and see GPs less often than people in major cities (AIHW – Rural and remote health).
Only choose Broome or Fremantle if you can commit to the whole program there. Notre Dame says transfers are granted only in exceptional circumstances (GEMSAS). If you mention a campus in your answer, make sure your reasons match the choice you made.
Common mistakes in the Notre Dame Fremantle MMI
- Looking at yourself, not the camera. In a recorded MMI, eye contact means looking at the lens. Put a small note next to it as a reminder.
- Losing track of time. Nobody will tell you to wrap up. Practice with a timer so you know how a full answer feels, and keep an eye on the on-screen clock.
- Freezing after a stumble. If you lose your train of thought, pause, say you will rephrase, and carry on. A calm recovery looks professional.
- Talking about rural health in vague terms. "I want to help rural people" is not enough. Talk about real issues such as access, distance, workforce and cultural safety, and keep it respectful. Do not claim to know a community you have not been part of.
- Reading a script. Memorised answers sound flat on video. Know your key points, then speak naturally.

Notre Dame Fremantle MMI FAQs.
Does Notre Dame use Casper?
Yes. For 2027 entry, GEMSAS says Notre Dame selects applicants for interview using GAMSAT, GPA, Casper and bonus points, weighted 30:30:30:10. After the interview, offers are ranked 50% on the interview and 50% on GAMSAT, GPA, Casper and bonus points (GEMSAS). Casper is a separate online test, so prepare for it on its own. Check GEMSAS for the 2028-entry rules.
Do I need to be Catholic to study medicine at Notre Dame?
No. Notre Dame's objects welcome students of all faiths and beliefs, and its strategy speaks of welcoming people of all faiths "and none at all" (Our vision). No religious requirement is listed for MD applicants (GEMSAS). You should still be ready to talk respectfully about ethics and the university's values.
Is the Notre Dame Fremantle interview live or recorded?
It is recorded. GEMSAS describes it as an MMI delivered on a recorded (asynchronous) online platform (GEMSAS). There is no live interviewer.
When do Notre Dame interview offers come out?
For the 2027 intake, interview offers were released in September 2026 (GEMSAS). GEMSAS listed the interview period as September/October 2026 and main offers at the end of October or early November 2026 (GEMSAS key dates). Dates for 2028 entry are not published yet, so check GEMSAS before you plan.
Does Notre Dame still use a portfolio or count work experience?
Not for the 2027 intake. GEMSAS states that work experience, field experience and extracurricular achievements are not considered. Selection for interview uses GAMSAT, GPA, Casper and bonus points (GEMSAS).
What GAMSAT and GPA do I need?
The minimums are a GAMSAT of 52 overall with at least 50 in each section, and a weighted GPA of 5.2 (GEMSAS). Applicants at the interview stage usually score well above this. The 2026 intake average was a GPA of 6.60 and GAMSAT of 65.50 (Notre Dame).
Who can apply for the Broome campus?
Anyone can choose KCRMT as a campus preference, but it is aimed at students from rural communities, with a focus on the Kimberley and Pilbara. People who have lived in the Kimberley or Pilbara for 5 years in a row or 10 years in total can apply directly to Notre Dame (GEMSAS).
Can I defer my offer?
No. GEMSAS states that Notre Dame offers cannot be deferred (GEMSAS).
