What does Flinders look for?

The MD Application Guide lists five qualities the interview is designed to assess:

  • Quality of motivation – why you want medicine, and whether your reasons are thought through and grounded in real experience.
  • Learning style – how you learn, how you respond to feedback and how you cope when something is hard.
  • Communication skills – whether you listen, explain clearly and respond to the person in front of you.
  • Pro-social attitude – whether you think about other people and the community, not just yourself.
  • Approach to decision-making – how you weigh up options when there is no perfect answer.

The Flinders MD apply page puts it slightly differently: communication, ethical reasoning, motivation for medicine, and the ability to reflect on personal experiences.

The College of Medicine and Public Health strategy says its purpose is education and research that "shape healthcare and impact lives". It names a responsibility to address health inequities, a goal to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, and values of accountability, diversity, generosity and inclusivity. The MD course page describes "a strong focus on social accountability, Indigenous health and health equity".

What this means for your answers: Flinders wants to hear how you think about people who are often missed by the health system – rural communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with fewer resources. You do not need to be an expert. But your examples should show you notice who is affected by a decision, not only what the "right" rule is. Because a community member sits on the panel, speak in plain language that anyone could follow.

How does the Flinders interview day work?

  1. Invitation. If you are shortlisted, Flinders emails you with the interview day details, what to bring and where to go. You must pay a non-refundable interview administration fee when you book. The interview is not confirmed until it is paid.
  2. Pick your slot inside the window. You must be free during the published period. Flinders states it will not consider requests for other dates.
  3. Arrive or log in. Adelaide and Darwin-based applicants attend in person. Interstate and regional applicants (more than 60 km from metropolitan Adelaide) may be interviewed online on Microsoft Teams. Test your camera, sound and internet beforehand.
  4. Meet the panel. You sit with a small panel, normally three people. They have not seen your application and know only your name. Your grades and GAMSAT are not discussed.
  5. Work through the scenarios. Over about 45–50 minutes the panel takes you through a common set of scenarios and questions. The interview is semi-structured, so panel members can ask follow-up questions to understand your thinking.
  6. Exam conditions. Flinders says interviews run under examination conditions, and breaking those conditions can lead to failing the interview. Do not share the content afterwards.
  7. After the interview. Panel notes are destroyed and only scores are kept. Flinders does not give feedback. Offers start from late October.

Flinders interview questions: common themes

Flinders does not publish its scenarios. Based on the qualities it says it assesses, expect themes like these:

  • Motivation and insight into medicine – why medicine, why now, and what you have seen of the reality of the job.
  • Reflection on your own experiences – times you made a mistake, received feedback, or changed your mind.
  • How you learn – handling pressure, workload and setbacks in a demanding course.
  • Ethical and practical decisions – situations with competing duties, where you need to explain your reasoning.
  • Working with others and community – teamwork, conflict, and caring about people beyond yourself.
  • Health equity and access – rural and remote health, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, and why some groups have worse outcomes.

Because this is a single, longer panel, answers can run deeper than in an MMI. Expect the panel to ask "why?" or "what would you do next?" after your first answer.

Practice question

Worked example (a new, practice-only question): "You are volunteering at a community sports club. A parent tells you, quietly, that they cannot afford the fees for next season and their child will have to stop playing. The club has no formal hardship policy. What would you do?"

A strong answer would:

  • Start with the parent: thank them for telling you, keep it private, and ask what would help rather than assuming.
  • Be honest about your role – you are a volunteer, so you cannot promise a fee waiver yourself.
  • Think about who else is affected: the child, other families who may be in the same position, and the club's need to cover costs.
  • Suggest realistic options, such as raising the issue (without naming the family) with the committee, or asking about existing council or community grants.
  • Link it to a bigger idea in plain words: cost stops people taking part in things that keep them healthy, and fair systems help everyone.
  • Finish with what you would check afterwards, showing you follow through.

How to answer "Why Flinders?"

Good answers use real features of the Flinders MD and connect them to your own experience:

  • Rural training from day one. The SA Rural Medical Program lets up to 60 students a year complete the whole MD in rural South Australia – Years 1–2 in Renmark (Riverland) or Mount Gambier, then Years 3–4 across rural regions. Year 3 is a long placement based mainly in general practice.
  • The Northern Territory. The Northern Territory Medical Program is taught in Darwin, with placements in places such as Alice Springs, Katherine and Nhulunbuy, and a focus on rural, remote and Indigenous health.
  • Social accountability and equity. The MD course page highlights social accountability, Indigenous health, health equity and the social determinants of health.
  • Research options. Research electives in Years 2 and 3, plus an MD/PhD program for future clinician-scientists (MD course page).
  • Public health. A combined Master of Public Health option is available (MD course page).

Pick one or two of these that genuinely connect to something you have done. A list of features with no personal link sounds rehearsed.

Common mistakes in the Flinders interview

  1. Preparing only for an MMI. Flinders is one long panel, not short stations. Practice holding a 45–50 minute conversation and answering follow-up questions without losing your thread.
  2. Talking only to the doctor. The panel includes a community member. Avoid medical jargon and make eye contact with everyone (or look at the camera if you are online).
  3. Giving a "correct" answer without reasoning. The panel is assessing your decision-making. Explain the options you considered and why you chose one.
  4. Forgetting the online setup. If you are interstate, you will likely be on Microsoft Teams. Poor sound or a busy background distracts from what you say. Do a full test run.
  5. Generic reflection. "I learned teamwork is important" says little. Describe what happened, what you did, and what you would do differently next time.

Free practice.

The best way to get used to a long panel interview is to practice out loud, with someone asking follow-up questions. Our free Flinders practice mock is a good place to start: try it, notice where your answers run short, and then practice those areas again. Try the free Flinders mock.

Flinders interview FAQs.

Is the Flinders medicine interview an MMI?

No. Flinders uses a semi-structured panel interview with a common set of scenarios and questions for all applicants. It normally lasts about 45–50 minutes (MD Application Guide).

Who is on the Flinders interview panel?

Flinders does not name your interviewers. Its guide says the panel normally includes an academic staff member, a community member and a doctor. They are only told your name.

Is the Flinders interview online or in person?

Both. If you live in metropolitan Adelaide or Darwin, you interview in person. If you are interstate or more than 60 km outside metropolitan Adelaide, you may be interviewed online through Microsoft Teams.

Does the Flinders Bachelor of Clinical Sciences / Doctor of Medicine have an interview?

No. The course page states that an interview is not required. Applicants are ranked on Year 12 results (90%) and UCAT ANZ (10%), with a minimum ATAR of 95 (course page).

What GAMSAT score do I need for a Flinders interview?

There is no fixed score, because cut-offs change each year. For 2027 entry, Flinders published cut-offs for the main round of interview offers. These ranged from 61 (Rural, Bedford Park) to 76 (non-Flinders, non-rural applicants). SARM and NTMP cut-offs were not published because those programs also use priority groups (MD apply page). Cut-offs for 2028 entry are not published yet.

How much does the interview count?

Your final rank is made up of your interview score, weighted GPA and GAMSAT, all equally weighted. You must pass the interview to be considered for an offer.

Can I get feedback on my Flinders interview?

No. Flinders records only scores, destroys panel notes and does not provide feedback on interview performance.

When does Flinders send offers?

Offers normally start from late October and can continue until the course starts in February (MD apply page).
